Chapter 12

“Rise and shine, Princess,” Needles said. “I need more pretzels!”

Groaning, I threw back the covers and stood. “Fine. I need coffee too.”

I shooed Needles out of the bedroom and quickly dressed in shorts, tank top, and sandals. Pulling my hair up into a high ponytail, I slipped out of the room.

“Morning,” Zoie mumbled from under the covers of her fold-out bed. “I think Needles has been trying to get me to get up and give him something. I’m choosing to ignore him.”

Needles zoomed to within an inch of Zoie’s face, raised his front paw, and shook it. “I could have died from starvation, you insolent teenager! If I didn’t like you so much, I’d carve out your tongue and dine on it!”

“Do I need to translate for you?” I joked.

Zoie closed her eyes and rolled over. “Nope. I understood.”

I walked the short distance to the kitchenette. Unrolling a bag of stick pretzels, I grabbed a handful and placed them on the counter. Needles flew over, dropped to the counter, and scooped up a pretzel with his paws.

“Now, I make coffee.”

Serena’s bedroom door opened, and she padded out in her bare feet. Yawning, she stretched her arms over her head. “Did you say coffee?”

“I sure did, cousin.”

Once the coffee was ingested, and the caffeine did its trick, we prodded Zoie into getting up.

“Come on,” I said, “we got thirty minutes before the brunch buffet opens.”

Zoie’s eyes popped open, and she sat up in bed. “Music to my ears.”

We helped her push the bed back inside the couch, and Serena and I each got another mug of coffee. We were about to head down for breakfast when my cell phone rang.

I glanced down at the display and frowned.

“It’s Opal.” I answered and put her on speakerphone. “Hey, Opal. What’s up?”

“I got something you might be interested in. It’s about one of your suspects.”

When she didn’t elaborate, I rolled my eyes. “What would that be, Opal?”

“I thought you’d never ask. It’s Andrea Alvarez, and the story she told you the first night you spoke with her. I did some digging on the Internet last night. You know that inn that had to close in New Hampshire because of Kymber’s review? Andrea didn’t tell the complete story. The truth is, Andrea is the niece of the owners, Simon and Nancy Storey. They’re her aunt and uncle on her mom’s side.”

I caught Serena’s eyes over the counter. “So, you’re saying Andrea had a pretty good motive to want to strike out and kill Tiffani, a good friend of Kymber’s?”

“I’d say so,” Opal said. “Some ditzy girl goes and harms my family…I might want some revenge.”

“This is huge,” I said. “You’re a lifesaver, Opal.”

“Just doing my job! That’s why I stick around this place. Keep me posted.”

I disconnected and took a sip of my coffee. “I’d say this bounces Andrea to the top of our suspect list.”

“Especially since she left out the fact that the innkeepers were her aunt and uncle,” Zoie said. “Makes you wonder what else she might have left out in her alibi to us.
